A baby can get scalp infection very easily and the result may be an unusual loss of hair. If the disease is not cured at the initial stage the baby is likely to grow up as a bald person. A scalp infection can be caused by a fungal infection, an autoimmune disease or a deficiency of essential minerals and vitamins.
Autoimmune Disease
When the immune system of the body starts destroying the healthy cells the disease comes into action. Since this is not caused by a virus or bacteria so for many people it is quite worrisome. When a hair loss occurs due to autoimmune disease it causes Alopecia Areata. This is not a common occurrence in babies and any hair loss due to this can be reversed. However the chances are bright that even after the cure the disease can again appear. As the baby grows old the immune system can be suppressed with the use of drugs and hence the damage can be stopped.
Fungal Infections
This is the most common cause of hair loss in children. Sometimes black dots also appear on the scalp that add to the hair loss. The condition is named as Tinea Capitis or ringworm of the scalp. The phenomenon is common in children or those who are growing to be adults but still their immune system is under-strength. This case should be referred to doctor who would normally recommend anti fungal medicine to be applied on the scalp. In the meanwhile some good dandruff shampoo can be used for the child as a measure to guard against the fungal attack.
A natural remedy is to apply diluted tea tree oil on the scalp of the child. This is an effective method to destroy the fungi.
Biotin Deficiency
Biotin is vitamin B 7 and is vital for the hair growth. A deficiency of this vitamin will result in hair loss not only on the scalp but also from the eye lashes and eyebrows. This deficiency equally affects children and adults. In many children the hair loss from eyebrows and eyelashes may even not be visible due to young age of the child.
Making up the deficiency of vitamin B 7 is the remedy for this. If the child is still breastfed the mother milk contains sufficient Biotin. However if the mother is herself deficient of the same then she will have to take some Biotin supplements. Before starting any treatment it is advisable to discuss the matter with your doctor.
